Trial Begins for Jerome Barrett Accused of 1975 Murder of Marcia Trimble

~Marcia Trimble

With jury selection completed the Marcia Trimble murder case will begin at 8:30 this morning. The jury consists of seven women and five men.

The first witness is expected to be Virginia Trimble, Marcia’s mother.

9-year-old Marcia disappeared Feb. 25, 1975 while delivering girlscout cookies. Evidence found when her body was discovered led police to believe that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.

Jerome Barrett was convicted earlier this year of murdering Vanderbilt University student Sarah Des Prez in 1975.

He was arrested and charged with Marcia’s death in early 2008. Prosecutors, in opening statements will tell the jury that Barrett's DNA was found on Marcia's blouse.

The trial will be streamed by several local stations and TruTV may also carry the trial.

36 Year Timeline

Added note:

Sprocket here. Like a commenter mentioned, Steve Huff of True Crime Report was from the Nashville area before moving to Georgia, and has written extensively about the Trimble case on his old blog, True Crime Weblog. Here is a link to the stories he as previously written on that blog.

Did Casey Anthony Chloroform Her Child?

Update 4! CASEY ANTHONY TO BE RELEASED ON BOND TOMORROW!

That's the question on every one's mind today. Last night, several news outlets as well as the Nancy Grace show reported startling new evidence was released by a source close to the investigation that "significant levels" of chloroform was detected in the trunk of Casey's car. In addition, web sites with information on chloroform and how to use it were found on Casey's laptop which was seized from her parents home when she was first arrested in July. This is pretty damming evidence against Casey that she was involved in the disappearance and apparent death of her child.

Leonard Padilla said there would be bombshell revelations and if this latest information is true, it qualifies as a big one. Up to this point, most bloggers and Internet posters have voiced opinions that whatever happened to Caylee was probably the result of an accident or negligence and that Casey did not intentionally kill her child. All that has change with this latest revelation.

Chloroform is a chemical compound that has many uses as a reagent or solvent and is also considered an environmental hazard. Chloroform was discovered in 1831, and first used as an anesthetic in 1947. The medical community went back to using ether when chloroform's toxicity and ability to cause sudden cardiac arrhythmia, also known as "sniffer's death" was discovered. 98% of the Chloroform produced in the US is for the production of R-22, a refrigerant that is scheduled to be phased out of use over the next ten years. Chloroform falls under the Controlled Substances Act and the FDA banned it's use in all drugs and cosmetics in 1979.

One has to wonder how chloroform could have ended up in the trunk of Casey's car, since it's not a substance you can easy purchase. With a little searching I found that chloroform is one many chemicals that is used in the illegal production of methamphetamine. If Casey was involved in the production of meth, or obtained chloroform from meth producers, it would explain many things especially her lies and behaviors. I don't know what the answer is at this point, but it's a pretty good bet the OCSO knows.

This morning bail bondsman, MacConald Bail Bonds again has posted Casey's bond for the new charges, however, Casey's attorney was not aware of it. It appears this posting was not necessarily done as a gesture of support for Anthony. From my understanding, once a bond is posted the clock stops that records the number of days a defendant has served towards a potential sentence. This means that once a defendant is sentenced by a judge, they would have to serve their full sentence from that date forward.

Also in the news yesterday Cindy and George Anthony met with a local high profile, media savvy attorney, Mark Nejame, supposedly only to discuss issues relating to Caylee, and not Casey. It appears that Nejame will represent George and Cindy, not Casey to counter the negative publicity. It's too late Cindy. The damage you've caused is done and no high profile attorney can fix it. Cindy's latest communication to the press proves my point. She sent this email to WFTV news late this morning:
"Leonard Padilla and Tim Miller came to me under false pretenses. Both claiming their sole purpose to find Caylee alive. Tim Miller misrepresented his intentions, and is falsely accusing me of not cooperating with him, when it is evident his motives were to obtain publicity for his organization at the expense of exploiting my granddaughters disappearance. Tim Miller tried to discredit Kid Finders Network by falsely stating that they tried to pull out of the search for Caylee. Mr. Miller also claims that he spent twelve hours in my home with my family including Casey, when in fact he spent only a few hours total with me and minutes with Casey. This is an example of Tim Miller following in Leonard Padillas footsteps. Although I feel his organization has a purpose, his misrepresentation has tainted the efforts of so many people with good intentions. I would have expected Tim Miller to speak with me one on one, rather than me hearing him on Nancy Grace."

Can you believe this woman? She's like the energizer bunny. She just keeps going and going and can't stop herself. Someone, please, pull this woman's battery, stat! Cindy is her own worst enemy. Her statements to the press have turned the general public against the family which may be one of the reasons Texas Equusearch has had such dismal turnouts for volunteers. Readers, you can help keep the search going for Caylee. If you can't donate you time, you can make a donation to Equusearch. Blogger Missing & Abducted gives the details on how you can do that in this entry.

ritanita is about to explode. I'm fuming about the e-mail Cindy sent. How dare she say that crap about EquuSearch and Tim Miller! She's really pulling out all the stops to make him quit the search. I hope he gets his angry up at her and answers her on NG tonight! Not likely, but he'd better get a bullet-proof ego for what she's doing. It's too early in the day for all this stuff! I'm going to be upset all day and I need to save my upset for later!

donchais and I are upset about all the latest news, too, ritanita! Special thanks to kathlb for the information on the bond posting.

Update!
Time Miller, founder of Equusearch responds to Cindy Anthony's latest rant:

"This is about Caylee, period, the end," Miller said. "And I would hope, if something has happened to Caylee, I would hope Cindy would want us out here finding her body too. If Cindy wants us to stop looking for her body, guess what -- we are not going to."

Update 2!
This Friday, ABC's 20/20 will cover the Casey Anthony case. 20/20 will air never before seen photos and video tapes of the family as well as show an interview with Casey's former boyfriend.

Update 3!
Here is the latest update posted on the OCSO website:

CAYLEE ANTHONY UPDATE #11 September 4, 2008

Volunteers are asked to meet at the search command center at 6317 TPC Boulevard before 8:30 AM. Volunteers will be given maps of the area and assembled into search teams. The daily searches will continue until dusk/dark.

We also continue to receive calls in reference to the specific nature of evidence recovered during the course of the Caylee Anthony investigation. As has been the policy during the course of this or any ongoing investigation being conducted by this agency, the Sheriff’s Office can not and will not provide details regarding the specific nature of criminal evidence it has recovered or expects to recover during the course of the investigation.

We will endeavor to provide you with the most recent and up to date information on this case immediately as it becomes available. Whatever information in released throughout the course of this investigation will ultimately be posted on the Caylee Anthony portion of the agency’s web site.

Update 4!
WFTV reporting that two bonding agencies, Macdonald in Kissimmee and Joe Von Waldner of Orlando are working together to post Casey Anthony's $500,200 bond. Casey Anthony could be released tomorrow. Can someone answer for me why would these bail bondsmen fork out all this cash for this poor excuse for a human being? Why should Casey be out on bond? She doesn't deserve to be out on bond!

Natalee Holloway: What do you believe happened?

I haven't had the opportunity to see the Peter R. de Vries undercover investigation show for myself. I've just see snippets advertizing the show, and I happened to see Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox this evening.

What I found most troubling was the fact that quite early on in the investigation, Aruban LE kept asking Beth and Jug Twitty if Natalee had ever had any seizures. Very early on. And here, two and a half years later, Joran is telling a "friend" that Natalee went into some kind of seizure and died on him during sex. Now how ironic is that? What are the odds that Aruban LE would just by innocent coincidence, ask Beth and Jug that? I'd say astronomical.

It leads me to believe that very early on in the investigation, Joran told LE this story about what happened to Natalee.

Gary Hilton prime suspect in Cheryl Dunlap murder

Interesting news about other possible murders and the negotiations with Hilton to recover Emerson's body.

According to Tallahassee.com,

Maj. Mike Wood of the Leon County Sheriff's Office has told the Tallahassee Democrat that Gary Michael Hilton is the prime suspect in the slaying of Cheryl Dunlap. Hilton has been charged with murder in the death of Georgia hiker Meredith Emerson.

"We have identified that he was in our county, and he is the prime suspect in a murder in Georgia where an ATM card was used," Wood said. "That makes him the focus of our investigation right now."

I agree with fellow crime blogger Steve Huff who posted in his comments section:

"Y'all, the removing of a murder victim's head (or hands, or any body part, for that matter) strikes me as the act of a person who is quite comfortable with murder. Someone I'd strongly believe has done this before."

I don't believe for a minute that the murder of Meredith Emerson is Hilton's first killing, and I would imagine that authorities in neighboring counties and states will be knocking on the GBI's door.

Meanwhile, Gainsville Times.com reported:
Dawson County District Attorney Lee Darragh was left out of the loop when prosecutors struck a deal with Gary Michael Hilton in order to locate the body of slain hiker Meredith Emerson. Darragh told reporters after an initial court appearance for Hilton today that neither he nor any member of his staff spoke with anyone in the offices of Union County District Attorney Stan Gunter or United States Attorney David Nahmias until after Hilton led authorities to Emerson's body in the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area Monday night.

What's going on in the Union Co. DA's office? Why wouldn't they bring this other county DA office into the loop? Is there something going on in Georgia that no one is talking about? Who knows. We do things pretty strange out here in Cali, too.

Steve Huff: True Crime Weblog

On the Bookshelf: Tearing Down the Wall of Sound, by Mick Brown, & The Diana Chronicles, by Tina Brown. (I ususally read 2 or more books at once.)

On Sound: Jennifer Warnes sings Leonard Cohen. (Famous Blue Raincoat)Boy, do I have some catching up to do! Several months ago, Steve Huff stopped posting at his True Crime Blog, and went back to his roots of posting on a variety of topics at a new blog, Random Lunatic News. I read that blog faithfully. Imagine my surprise to realize today that Steve has been posting like mad about crime at a new url, True Crime Weblog for well over a month! Typing in his old blogspot url will redirect you to the new place.

If you are interested in following crime news on the net, and you don't know who Steve Huff is, you should. He is (imho), the best out there in blogging about crime, often the first to find Internet writings or MySpaces pages on a particular suspect or murdered victim in the news. I'll be reading Steve for the next week or more, catching up.

A Few Topics

On the bookshelf: Tearing Down the Wall of Sound, by Mick Brown & Too Late To Say Goodbye, by Anne Rule. I'm reading both at once.

Music Playing: Leonard Cohen's "Live Songs," track 1, Dance Me to the End of Love

Leonard Cohen
A reader recently emailed me their thoughts on the Leonard Cohen album that Spector produced, Death of a Ladies Man, thinking that the songs on that album were very dark; "blood chilling" were their words. They felt that these lyrics somehow related to Spector. I disagreed. Cohen has been writing about dark subjects long before he was introduced to Phil Spector. I'm a long time Cohen fan, dating back to my late teens when I was introduced to his music via a boyfriend. Back then, (over 30 years ago) I played Cohen's albums endlessly, specifically Songs of Love and Hate, Songs From a Room and Songs of Leonard Cohen. The lyrics are what spoke to my soul at that time in my life, seeing as how I viewed myself as a poet with a tortured heart. (Is there a young teen aged girl who hasn't gone through unrequited love at that time of her life? It's a rite of passage.) Even now, I can put on virtually any Cohen album and the lyrics will come back to me instantly. To me, there are some lyrics on these early albums that rival those on the Spector produced album. What comes to mind are the words to songs like Dress Rehearsal Rag, The Master Song, Seems So Long Ago, Nancy, and Diamonds in the Mine. The lyrics in some of these songs touch on suicide, degradation as well as subjugation by another person. In fact, I really like the song True Love Leaves No Traces on the Spector produced album as well as Fingerprints.

Barbara Payton
A Court TV poster sent me this link to a Crime Magazine story about Barbara Payton, the actress who starred with James Cagney in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye. The poster (I'll call them "L") did a lot of Internet research on Payton, and felt this online article was the most comprehensive one they came across. Payton's life story is a sad one. She had a rocky career in Hollywood, starring in other noteworthy films such as Trapped, Flo and Dallas. Payton lived life on the edge, and Hollywood, rejecting her behavior, pushed her out. According to the linked story, she was a wild character, often had romances with her leading men, and when she did have a sugar daddy ~a man 22 years her senior~ she cheated on him. She eventually ended up on skid row, penniless, her movie career life destroyed years earlier.

L's thought was, that the Spector defense tried to present Lana to this jury in a similar light. That the story of Payton's life was the playbook they used, and they tried to sell to the jury a similar story about Lana. I don't think the defense team succeeded, (seeing as how Madam Gibson and Raul Julia Levy were prevented from "testilying") but it is a very interesting read none the less.

Bloggers vs Internet Forums
It amazes me that occasionally Internet Forum and message board posters still look down on Bloggers as if they are an inferior life form. As if their Internet ramblings on various topics are somehow superior than someone who maintains a blog. The logic of that astounds me. What many of these literary Einsteins don't realize is, that the MSM (mainstream media) often lumps everyone all in together (Bloggers and message board posters alike) calling them "Bloggers" when there is a noteworthy story involving the Internet. Blogging is something that's been around for a while now, and there are hundreds upon hundreds of new blogs started on a daily basis. I've even been told that some colleges are even offering Blogging classes in their curriculum's, although I don't know if that's just a rumor or not.

I think Bloggers have made an important impact on how people communicate and relate to each other. Just look at MySpace, (That place is sporkin' huge!) or some of the other networking sites that are MySpace competitors. Blogging is a part of our 21st century lifestyle, and one thing it reflects is our very human need to express ourselves, and the hope that there is someone out there, listening. One of the Bloggers I really admire is Steve Huff, and I make sure to check his blog on a regular basis to see if he has a new entry up. Back when Steve was blogging almost exclusively about crime, he was the one who beat the MSM in finding child molester/murder Joseph Duncan's MySpace page and other Internet postings. Steve is well known for his ability to find stuff on the net that others miss. He is often the first to find any Internet postings by the latest high profile murder suspect in the news. Just look at his archives. They are chock full of stories that he broke due to his unique Internet searching skills.

Real Life, Sewing and Bodywork
I'm finally getting back into a regular schedule with my bodywork clients. Just yesterday a client called me and said, "I heard that trial was over with, so I thought it would be safe to call you and be able to get an appointment during the week." Last night I finally put some time aside to plant the pots in the front of the house. They've been empty, ever since the trial started.

I still have the pots in the back yard to do, and other flower beds that need serious attention. I'm also knee deep in getting back into sewing. I have quite a few back orders to work on. I had a handbag alteration request (by the mother of a Star Wars princess) that literally hung on a hanger for months while I attended the trial. I finally got that finished at 2 in the morning two days ago. And, I've got some presents that I started but are half finished.

Right now, I'm in the beginning stages of Market Bag and Market Tote production. (Check out my sewing blog or my photobucket account for images of the Market Line bags.) This is a tedious and boring process of hand bonding sheets of glue onto yards and yards and yards of heavy canvas (also known as duck cloth). The 50 yard roll is quite heavy and hard to maneuver on my large cutting board. I roll a bit out, iron on the glue, cut off a long 20" x 60" strip, roll out the canvas some more, iron on more glue, and then cut off another strip. Those strips of canvas are then cut into 20" squares that the cotton print will be ironed/bonded to. So if you are interested in a Market Bag or a Market Tote, I recommend you email me (link can be found on my profile page) now and place an order. Once I stop this initial production process, I won't be making anything in the Market Line until after the new year; I'll be moving onto another item. Here are some Market Bags Market Totes, and Mini Market Purses.
