Robert Durst - Arraignment at Airport Courthouse Today

UPDATE 11/8/16The LA Times reported the next pretrial hearing in the Durst case is scheduled for February 15, 2017. The LA County Sheriff's inmate locator website indicates Durst is currently being housed in the "Twin Towers" facility. Interestingly, the Sheriff's website does not indicate the next court date.

Robert Durst - A Brief Synopsis
Eccentric real estate millionaire Robert Durst, connected to the murder of Morris Black and the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen, is due in court today on charges relating to the murder of his long time friend and supporter, Susan Berman.

Susan Berman, Wikipedia

Berman
, a mobster's daughter, was found dead in her Benedict Canyon home on Christmas Eve 2000. She was shot in the back of the head and found at least a day after her murder.

Durst was arrested in March 2015 and charged with first degree murder in connection with Berman's death. Previously, Durst was arrested for the murder of a neighbor, Morris Black on October 9, 2001. in Galveston, Texas. Durst claimed he murdered Black in self defense. Durst was acquitted of the Black's murder. He eventually pled guilty to body dumping and evidence tampering. Kathleen McCormack Durst is still missing and presumed dead. In April 2016, Kathleen's family petitioned a NY court to have her declared legally dead.

Andrew Jarecki's HBO documentary, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, uncovered physical evidence that prosecutors believe links Durst to Berman's murder. At the end of the documentary, Robert Durst is caught on audio tape stating he "... killed them all."

Durst's arraignment, case #SA089983 will be at the Airport Courthouse, Department W81 at 1:30 pm. Deputy District Attorney John Lewin is prosecuting the case. Expect a big media turnout for Durst's first appearance in California.

This video was first posted on YouTube in 2011. It's a 10 minute video where veteran LAPD Detectives Jackson and Marcia advise author Michael Connelly how they would investigate a crime scene that originated in room 79 at the Chateau Marmont.

Since I am a fan of all three individuals as well as the Chateau Marmont, I thought I would share this video with T&T readers.  Enjoy!

Markers & Goals V

Today just a little past 9:30 am Pacific Time, T&T reached a new marker: 3 million page views.

We think that's pretty good for a website that is add free and has no advertising budget. All court costs are partially offset by reader donations, readers just like you.

Besides myself, ritanita, CaliGirl9 and Days Like This all want to say to our loyal readers, Thank you so much for continuing to read and support T&T.

Independence Day, 2015

Reposting T&T's entry from 2012. Sprocket

As you plan your holiday today, I thought I would bring T&T readers some little known facts about our nation's beginnings.

July 4th is the day we historically celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. However, there are online sources that indicate our independence was declared on July 2nd, and the document signed a month later on August 2nd.

This is our 239th year as an independent nation, however, the Army was formed a year earlier.

One of our basic freedoms we enjoy today is freedom of the press, which is part of the First Amendment to our constitution.

There are some historical myths about the Fourth of July and whether or not "Betsy Ross" sewed our nation's first flag.

I guess there will always be those who will believe a story because of who told it, or because it's more interesting than the truth. Although I started T&T over eight years ago as an online diary of attending a murder trial, myself and the rest of T&T's contributors pride ourselves on getting the story right and reporting the facts as accurately as possible.

Stay safe and enjoy your holiday. I'll leave you with a favorite quote:

American traditions and the American ethic require us to be truthful, but the most important reason is that truth is the best propaganda and lies are the worst. To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible we must be truthful. It is as simple as that.

T&T Update on Several Cases

UPDATE 1/23/15 Dawn DaLuise case
UPDATE 1/21/15 spelling, clarity
January 20, 2015
Hope all is well with everyone in the new year.

This is just a short post to let T&T readers know that I haven't dropped off the face of the earth and forgotten about covering cases. One of my main priorities is being the financial manager for Mr. Sprocket's business. Through November and December, I helped Mr. Sprocket put together some difficult proposals for his business and I'm helping with another difficult proposal this month, too. Additionally, the December holidays are the busiest time of year for my home business.

A big Thank You, to those of you have inquired about how Mr. Sprocket is doing since his heart attack last May. He's actually doing quite well. He's only gained three pounds since losing over 30 in the ICU. His latest blood work tests were pretty good considering where he was six months ago.

Here are some short updates on the cases I'm covering as well as a new trial I'm going to cover in the next week.

Cameron Brown - Next Hearing: 1/27/15
To recap, Brown is charged with first degree murder in the November 8, 2000, death of his 4 year old daughter, Lauren. Prosecutors allege Brown threw his daughter off of Inspiration Point, a 120ft cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes. Brown has had two hung juries and will be going to trial for a third time.

Although I had to miss the last two pretrial hearings in the Cameron Brown case, I believe I will be able to make the next one on January 27th. Last time I dropped in on the case, a trial date was tentatively set for April 2015.

Michael Gargiulo 1/9/15
Gargiulo is charged with a total of seven counts and is facing the death penalty. His charges include two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape. At the November pretrial hearing, Gargiulo relinquished his pro per status. Charles Lindner has been reinstated as defense counsel.

I'm still working on getting my notes finished for the last hearing on January 9, 2015. The next pretrial hearing in Gargiulo's case will be March 20, 2015. As of the January 9 hearing, the status of Gargiulo being able to have massive amounts of court documents with him in his cell hasn't been resolved yet. There will be more on that, in my post that I hope to have up in a few days.

Dawn DaLuise 1/12/15 - UPDATE
DaLuise is charged with one count of murder for hire. Opening statements started on January 9, 2015.  I missed the first day of trial since I was covering the Gargiulo hearing downtown. I attended the second day of trial on January 12, when the prosecution presented their first three witnesses. Local ABC 7 covered the case with well known sketch artist, Mona Edwards providing visual color for their on air reports. You can read a bit of their trial coverage and see some sketches at this link. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend any more of the trial. According to the DA's calendar, closing arguments will be presented tomorrow. It's a good bet the jury will get the case sometime in the afternoon on Wednesday.

1/23/15
On Thursday, January 22, a jury found Dawn DaLuise not guilty of attempted murder. According to ABC Channel 7 article:

Dawn DaLuise, a former model and skin care business owner, was arrested in March 2014 for allegedly trying to contract former NFL player Chris Geile to murder rival business owner Gabriel Suarez.
During the trial, Geile testified that he was a shoulder to cry on for DaLuise, but that he never thought she was trying to solicit him to commit murder.

The ABC story has video of DaLuise with her attorney, Jamon Hicks after the verdict.

Rafael Enrique Martinez, Jr. 1/13/15
After the Gargiulo hearing, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Akemon mentioned that his next case, a cold case, would be at the Van Nuys Courthouse, Dept. V.

People v. Martinez is scheduled to start on January 26, 2015 and is expected to take about three weeks with an additional 3 to 5 days for jury selection. Although I dropped in on a case or two this past year, the last trial I covered from start to finish was the Kelly Soo Park trial in 2013. This would be a chance to cover a relatively short case close to home. The first trial I ever attended was at the Van Nuys Courthouse. It was the Robert Blake trial back in 2004-2005, long before the start of T&T.  One of the reasons I'm interested in attending this trial is the fact that the defense has informed the court that the defendant is expected to take the stand and testify in his own defense.

Rafael Enrique Martinez, Jr., allegedly a member of La Eme, is charged with 187 felony murder in the deaths of Nancy Boehm (pronounced "Beem") and her son Shawn in a North Hollywood neighborhood back in September 1997. It's my understanding that Shawn, 23, was autistic with the mind of a 12 year old. He was often seen by neighbors riding his bicycle around the neighborhood.

Martinez was already serving a 14 year sentence in prison for voluntary manslaughter when he was identified as a suspect in these murders. The prosecution will introduce evidence that Martinez's DNA was found under Nancy's fingernails. Here is an LA Times article that give a few facts of the case and Martinez's arrest in November 2009.

I attended a pretrial hearing in the case on Tuesday, where Judge Susan Speer ruled on several defense and prosecution motions in limine regarding the admissibility of evidence. Judge Speer is an atractive, bespeckled woman with short, blondish straight hair that stops above her shoulders.

Rafael Martinez is represented by Tom Burns with the Alternate Public Defender's Office. Mr. Burns is a slender man with gray hair. When I arrived, I made sure to check in with the bailiff and to ask if Judge Speer allowed journalists to use laptops for note taking only. She does. When DDA Akemon arrived, it was evident that several of the deputies in Judge Speer's courtroom were happy to see him. One female deputy told me that they miss Mr. Akemon. He used to work in the DA's Van Nuys office, Hardcore Gang Division. It's my understanding that DDA Akemon has tried a few cases before Judge Speer before.

1/20/15
I was back at the Van Nuys Courthouse again today, for Judge Speer's rulings on defense motions to admit evidence of third party culpability. One of these motions overlapped a prosecution motion to exclude certain evidence. When I arrived on the 8th floor of Van Nuys West I got a surprise. In the hallway was none other than former DDA Alan Jackson. Many of you may remember Jackson from the Spector case as well as the James Fayed case. Jackson is in private practice now, mostly handling civil matters. I got a hello hug from Jackson and he asked me why I was here. I told him that I'm following one of DDA Akemon's cases. Akemon and Jackson are good friends from when they worked together in the DA's Major Crimes Division.

Inside Dept V, there is a single outlet on the left wall and I grabbed that seat so I could use my laptop. The morning session was entirely taken up by pretrial hearings in other cases.  While I was waiting on the Martinez case, I tried keeping my eye on the door for when DDA Akemon and Mr. Burns would arrive. A few hours into the morning session I looked back at the door and saw one of the Van Nuys Cowboys, Detective Pete Barba. "The Cowboys" were the team of homicide detectives that solved the cold case murder of Sherri Rasmussen and led to the arrest of LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus. I caught Barba's eye, gave him a smile and wave.

After hearing oral arguments from the defense and counter arguments from the people, Judge Speer denied defense motions to introduce evidence of potential third party culpability by three different individuals. Judge Speer informs counsel that she read almost every case before the California Supreme Court and Appeals Court regarding 3rd Party Culpability evidence.

The court then went over every item in detail that the defense wanted to admit and then gave her reasons why that evidence did not meet the standard. Mr. Burns gave a valiant effort in oral argument to defend some of the evidence he was trying to have admitted. The court did rule that the defense will be allowed to introduce the fact that fingerprints from some identified and some unidentified individuals were found in the residence, but she placed limitations on the jury being presented with each and every name for prints that were identified.

Judge Speer then outlined for counsel her general trial procedures. DDA Akemon is familiar but Mr. Burns was not. 16 jurors will be selected for this trial. Since there are only 14 seats in the jury box, two jurors will sit outside the jury box and in the row of gallery seats directly in front of it.

I found it interesting that Judge Speer does not designate alternate jurors at the start of the trial. All 16 jurors will be sworn in as jurors. After the trial is completed and the jurors have been read jury instructions, four juror numbers will be randomly selected from a hat to be the alternates. Judge Speer indicated that she feels this method has all jurors pay more attention to the evidence if they don't know if they will be an alternate or not. This method also gives counsel more preemptive strikes. She explained it to counsel, but I wasn't quite following the details of that.

For voir dire, Judge Speer will go through the hardship questions and then she uses a preset list of questions for the first 16 jurors in the box. Once she has asked each juror her questions on that form, she will open up voir dire to counsel. She indicated she would give 20 minutes to each counsel. Mr. Burns appeared concerned about that short amount of time for the first jurors in the box. Judge Speer uses CALCRIM instructions (verses CALJIC) and she types up her own jury instructions.

One of Judge Speer's pet peeves is running out of witnesses in the afternoons. She reminds counsel to have their witnesses stacked with no more than 30 minute call times.  Counsel confirm to the court that they will not need any interpreters for witnesses.

Judge Speer tells counsel that she does not want speaking objections during testimony. She will make a note of the objections and typically will wait until the next break to argue those objections on the record outside the presence of the jury.  To me, it sounds like this would reduce the number of bench sidebars.

When Judge Speer is finished, I believe it's the Sheriff's Department that asks for a Wilson hearing and presents a number of inmate discipline reports for the defendant. Judge Speer reads into the record the incidents the Sheriff's Dept. provided on the defendant. These incidents involve the defendant not complying with deputy's orders, difficult situations for the sheriffs involving threatening statements, talking back to deputies, and swearing.  Judge Speer states that the defendant is convicted of voluntary manslaughter, associated with La Eme and that the people are seeking life without possibility of parole. Judge Speer rules there is a manifest need to utilize a type of restraint on the defendant. An invisible stealth belt will be connected to the back of the chair.

The defense objects. Mr. Burns argues, "I don’t believe there’s enough evidence. He’s been coming to court without any disturbance. ... He has every incentive to be a gentleman in the courtroom. ... They (the jury) are going to decide his fate. He knows they're going to decide his fate and he knows this. ... And he's a smart man. I don't think there's any cause to restrain him."

Judge Speer responds, "Mr. Burns, I’ve been in so many courtrooms where it would seem counter productive for a defendant to act out." Judge Speer recounts to the defense her own experiences of having people be injured, stabbed, reporters injured, and her own experience of having to crawl under a desk. She adds that it usually happens outside the presence of the jury.

DDA Akemon replies, "The people concur with the Sheriffs Department on the analysis and request. The incident in custody of violence and other nonconforming behavior, Mr. Martinez's connection to the Mexican Mafia, ... I think there is a manifest need in this case."

Mr. Burns asks about a shock belt being used instead. The Sheriff's representative informs the court that those are no longer being used. Mr. Burns asks to see the stealth belt and the deputy takes out and and shows him how it's used. It is attached around the waist and hidden under a jacket or a pulled out shirt. It's explained to Mr. Burns that with the stealth belt, the jurors will not be able to see that the defendant is restrained to the chair. It is the least visible and the most minimal restraint. The defendant's arms and hands will be free.

And that's it for today. Counsel is ordered back at 9:30 for any last minute decisions. The jurors are expected at 10:00 am.

I will be back for the first day of trial in the hopes that in this small courtroom and a total of 61 fixed folding seats in the gallery, I will be able to attend voir dire. It will all depend on the judge and available seating. I believe the court may have already pre-qualified 75 jurors. That's a lot of jurors to cram into that courtroom.

First Hummingbird Nest of the Season

UPDATE 1/11/15 - Sad News.
UPDATE: 1/10/15 -  First Egg!
UPDATE: 3:00 PM

The New Year
To begin, the Sprocket household has been under the weather. Mr. Sprocket is back to work today after a four day stint as sofa king. He's not 100%, but four clients needed service calls and he is a bit better. He's been battling something in the back of his throat. He never coughed, he never got a fever, but he felt miserable and weak all over.

I've also been on the edge of something myself but not nearly as bad as Mr. Sprocket. I had to cancel dinner plans tonight with beloved friends and I'm trying to save my energy for a hearing in the Michael Gargiulo case tomorrow morning.  It could partly be due to my sleep schedule being totally out of whack from late night sewing. I'm trying to work out the design problems of my new Hot/Cold Pack, the Shoulder Wrap.  I hope to have these up on my Etsy store, soon.

Two days ago, I was in the back yard putting up fresh hummingbird food when I happened to see, high up in the rhododendron bushes along the fence, a momma hummingbird with a bit of fluff in her beak. My heart soared. I knew there was a nest nearby.

Sherri Rae Rasmussen
Back in 2012, right before the start of the Stephanie Lazarus murder trial, I discovered a hummingbird nest in a ficus tree on my back patio.

 Mrs. Ficus' first nest, 2012
1.5 inches by 2 inches

I've had several other hummingbird nests on the property since, but I like to think that it was Sherri Rasmussen's spirit that nudged that hummingbird to build her nest there, right by my patio window at that time. The joy that nest brought me was a comfort during the difficult days of attending that trial. To this day, every time I discover a new nest I think of Sherri, and all the promise her life held.

Finding the New Nest
I was hoping the new nest wasn't 15 feet up in the cactus-type trees in my neighbors yard, but in the rhododendrons where I've had several nests since 2013.

Two trees, home of hummingbird nest retreat.

Today, I went out and started searching. I knew there was a nest because momma would not shut up. She was chirping like a nervous nellie when I stood in front of one particular tree.  I first found an old nest that I completely missed last year. It is in the tree on the right. I could tell it was an old nest because there was a dead leaf over the nest and the nesting material had hardened. Active hummingbird nests are amazingly soft to the touch. I removed the leaf and took some photos. Can you see the nest in the photo?

Can you find the old nest in this tree?

This nest is about 5 feet 9 inches off the ground. I can stand right under it with about 3 inches to spare. Here's a close up:

2013 Nest

As momma kept chirping I kept looking for the new nest. About ten minutes later I found it.

First Nest of 2015 "Loft Nest"

Unfortunately, it's about 10 to 11 feet off the ground and will be difficult to photograph the babies once they hatch. It will also be difficult to help protect this nest with plastic if we get another hard rainfall. Here are a few close ups of the nest.

UPDATE 3:00 PM
I started to wonder if there were eggs in the loft nest, so dragged myself outside again. I pulled out the 7 foot step ladder to look inside the nest. The nest is about 9.5 feet off the ground.

Loft Nest: No eggs yet!

I'll keep everyone posted as to Mrs. Loft and the progress on her nest and eggs, once she gets around to laying them.

UPDATE 1/10/15 9:00 AM
At the first sound of a light rain on my roof, I went outside to put a clear cover over the Loft Nest. I've placed this same type of vinyl over two other nests in the past.

Clear vinyl placed over the nest to protect from rain

When I got up on the ladder I peeked inside. Sometime between 2 PM yesterday and 9 AM today, Mrs. Loft laid her first egg.  Her second shouldn't be far behind.

First egg for Mrs. Loft

UPDATE 1/11/15 12:30 PM
Sad news on Mrs. Loft's nest. Although we did not have a very hard rain all night, it was constant. When I went to check the Loft nest a few minutes ago, from the ground it looked intact. However, when I climbed the ladder to the nest, there were no eggs. The nest was damp to the touch and there was a section that had broken away. I found a partial eggshell on the ground near the ladder.
I will improve the cover over her nest in the hopes that she either tries to reuse it or will use the material in another nest construction nearby.

Merry Christmas, from the Sprocket Household

Mr. Sprocket called me into our bedroom. He told me it was a "photo op" moment.

From left to right:

Happy Thanksgiving 2014

Today, our nation gives thanks. Wikipedia has interesting information about the roots of Thanksgiving in the US, Canada and other countries.

Six months ago, I did not know if my husband, "Mr. Sprocket" would survive his heart attack. Today, Mr. Sprocket (the head cook at our house) will be fixing an organic turkey, mashed sweet potatoes, string beans and a "no corn," cornbread. I am very thankful that he is doing well, back to work and healthier than he's ever been.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of T&T's readers.

Beth Karas Launches KarasOnCrime.com

 Beth Karas

In mid October 2014, right before the start of the Jodi Arias penalty phase retrial, former CourtTv/TruTv reporter and legal analyst Beth Karas launched a new website, KarasOnCrime.com, a monthly subscription based website.

On her new site, Karas explains why:
For the duration of Jodi Arias’s penalty phase retrial in Phoenix, Arizona, I’ll bring you updates and analysis through videos on this site. Why did I launch this? Because the judge is not allowing the trial to be televised live, and many of you who followed last year’s trial want to know the details of the retrial and how it ends. I was there every day last year, and I, too, want to see the final chapter.
Here’s the plan: I will file a video report on the BK Live link on the site to talk about the entire day’s events—who testified, reaction from the players and jurors, and other observations. I’ll also answer your questions.
The access fee to KarasOnCrime is $5.99 per month. I believe this is the exact amount that CourtTv offered, back in 2004-2007, for online access to their accumulated video library of trial coverage.

There are several other journalists who are live-tweeting the Arias penalty phase retrial, but they don't bring to the table the experience and insight that Karas provides in her live blogging and her nightly wrap-ups. T&T co-contributor ritanita tells me, "Beth's site is excellent."

I don't have any personal insight, but I would not be surprised if there is a book in Beth's future. A book from Beth, detailing her experience as an Assistant District Attorney in New York City, as well as the many high profile trials she attended and reported on would be a fantastic read. I hope my wishful thinking comes true.

A Note to Readers

As some of you know, several things have kept me from catching up on several cases I've been following.

I've been crazy busy helping Mr. Sprocket get back to work full time (he's doing fabulous, by the way) as well as several house and car projects that needed my attention.

You can see some of my recent hard work at my sewing machine, since I'm kicking off my Market Bag Madness Sale 2014 today.

I'll be getting back to writing about Michael Gargiulo, Cameron Brown, Dawn DaLuise and Joshua Woodward in the next few days.

Thank you everyone, for your patience.

Belated Merry Christmas 2013

Tree at the US Capitol Building, date unknown

UPDATED 12/26: spelling of Ms. Brazil's name
The T&T crew hopes everyone had a memorable holiday this year.

Since I am under the weather with a sore throat, we had a low-key celebration at home. Mr. Sprocket is the resident cook and this year he made an excellent turkey with chili from the local Indian store.

Trial Coverage Update
After my last post on December 10, I took a break from writing to sew holiday gifts for friends and family. I did step away from my sewing machine to attend a pretrial hearing for Gerhard Becker on December 11, and more of Joshua Woodward's prelim on December 16.  I hope to be finished sewing in the next day or two and I will update those stories over the next few weeks.

I have the rest of the Bryan Barnes and Javier Bolden prelim coming, as well as a story on DDA Deborah Brazil's December 11 swearing in ceremony to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Sprocket Gift Wrapping Tip
If you run out of wrapping paper on Christmas eve, fabric works in a pinch.

Happy Holidays, and best wishes for the new year.

Happy Thanksgiving 2013

UPDATE 11/29: clarity, accuracy of page load activity
T&T Gives Thanks
As we come closer to the end of 2013, Thanksgiving is a time where our nation looks back on the many things we have to be thankful for. I am thankful that T&T continues to be recognized as a respected news source for gavel to gavel trial coverage.

Within the next couple of days, T&T's page loads will pass the 2,550,000 mark.  It's been 22 months since Stephanie Lazarus was convicted, and almost 6 months since Kelly Soo Park was acquitted. However, those two cases still draw a considerable amount of T&T's traffic. Many thanks to T&T readers who continue to support and appreciate our work.

Recently, I've been trying to put up more "Quick Links" archival pages of past cases that T&T contributors have covered. You can now find in one place (right side of the page), links to the complete coverage of all the high profile cases T&T has covered.  Quick Links pages that still need to be completed are Phil Spector 1, Casey Anthony, and Mark Jensen trial.

What's Ahead for Trials in 2014
It looks like the Gerhard Becker case will go to trial in early January 2014. Sources tell me this case could take as long as six to eight weeks and I don't know if I can devote that much time to the case. I plan on attending opening statements once a jury is selected.

From the last pretrial hearing in the Cameron Brown case, if there are no further bumps in the road, that case will start sometime in April 2014. The Brown case is my top priority case and the one I've been waiting on the longest.

The Michael Thomas Gargiulo case is most likely, a year away from trial. Once the prosecution has turned over all it's discovery, it will be interesting to see what motions Gargiulo files in the months ahead.

It appears the Ka Pasasouk case will go to trial faster than some of DDA Akemon's other cases I've been following (Gargiulo, Barnes & Bolden)

There are a couple of other interesting cases that I might pick up. The Alberd Tersargyan case and the Samuel Little case.

Future of T&T
For over five years, T&T has brought our readers unparalleled, advertising free, trial coverage from inside the courtroom. During the Lazarus trial, T&T put a donation link on the blog. The generous donations from T&T readers during the Lazarus and Park trials have helped to offset some of my travel and court expenses. However, Mr. Sprocket picks up the rest.

For 2014, T&T will be exploring other avenues to make T&T self supporting and profitable. Advertising and sponsorship are just some of the ideas that we will be looking at in the months ahead.

In closing, T&T would like to wish everyone a safe and memorable holiday season this year.

Veterans Day 2013

U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. (Source)

This is a portion of a post originally published in May 2012 and republished on Memorial Day 2013. Sprocket.

My father was a WWII veteran.  He enlisted while still attending high school.  He reported to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center immediately upon graduation.  He shipped out of San Diego and served in the Pacific on a navy war ship.  His ship was under fire and he saw combat.  When his ship was hit with artillery, fellow shipmates fell around him.  In the mid fifties the Navy honored him with a miniature Iwo Jima statue because his ship was close to that action.

If you are near a Veterans Memorial today, please try to stop by and visit.

9/11 2013 Never Forget

UPDATE 9/14: clarity, accuracy
Today I'm at the downtown Los Angeles Criminal Justice Center to see if the Joshua Woodward case will be transferred from Dept. 30 to a courtroom today.  I had heard a report that the case would be in Dept. 41 for prelim today, but the court's public information office tells me the case is still in Dept. 30 for pretrial possible prelim setting.

Woodward, a restaurateur who has in the past, opened locations in Miami, New York and Los Angeles is charged with four counts of attempted murder of his girlfriend's fetus.  Woodward was charged in October last year and is currently out on bond.

Beth Karas Joins WILD ABOUT TRIAL: Web Streaming, Trial Coverage Web Site

Beth Karas

The announcement is official on the Wild About Trial web site, that Beth Karas has joined the team as their Senior Legal Analyst.   Wild About Trial provides news coverage and live web streaming of high profile trials. Beth will cover cases, write a column and do live video chats. You can read the official announcement, HERE.

Alison Triessl, who represented Lois Goodman against felony murder charges (the charges were later dropped), launched Wild About Trial in 2012. I briefly met Alison during the pretrial hearings in the Goodman case.  On November 8th last year, this is what Alison said about T&T's Goodman coverage: "I love your blog! ... So much detail."

I met Beth in 2007 on the second day of the first Phil Spector trial and she's been a friend ever since.  Over the years she's been an invaluable resource and has helped to guide me in more ways that I can count. I knew some time ago that Beth was looking to branch out into something new. When Beth was let go from CNN's In Session, she spread her wings and landed at Wild About Trial.  I've been waiting to announce her move to Wild About Trial for over a week now. I'm so happy that Beth landed a great gig where she will continue to do what she does best.

Beth's trial coverage is top notch. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't think there is anyone else on TV that comes close to Beth's no nonsense style of trial reporting. CNN's In Session's loss of Beth Karas is Wild About Trial's gain.

DUI Crash in Sherman Oaks

Looking south, driveway entrance to apartment parking area.

Last night after midnight, about a half mile from the Sprocket residence, there was a big DUI crash in Sherman Oaks.  An RV traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into several parked cars, a power pole and an apartment building.

I had heard about this accident on the ABC news this morning, so when Mr. Sprocket and I took our morning walk, we headed in that direction. Mr. Sprocket and I spoke to ABC's stunningly beautiful Subha Ravindhran, who told Mr. Sprocket that there were rats inside the motor home.  Here's a short fifteen second video up on YouTube.

The vehicle was traveling west on Clark St. when it crossed Sepulveda Blvd. and continued on down a narrow driveway to the apartment complex parking lot.  The RV plowed into cars parked up against the fence dividing that complex from the next door apartment parking to the south.  The RV continued down the narrow driveway, taking out a power pole and the parking lot security gate.

Below are some photos I took at the scene.  Please understand I'm not a very good photo journalist. I took these with my cell phone in bright sunlight.

Mr. Sprocket pointed out the RV's muffler in the debris.

Mr. Sprocket wanted me to get a photo of the environmentally
friendly product the Dept. of Water & Power
(DWP) clean up crew were using.

From the adjacent parking lot, view of the fence the
RV hit dividing the properties.  Cars parked along
this fence were hit/damaged. Photo center,
you can also see where that electrical
box on the building was damaged.

gate in right part of the photo the RV plowed through.
