Ed Halverson Stuns Court at Sentencing

District Judge David Barker sentenced Ed Halverson to three to ten years in jail for domestic battery with a deadly weapon. Halverson took an Alford plea on Oct. 24, avoiding a trial when he pleaded guilty to the one count after he attacked Judge Halverson with a frying pan on Sept. 4. Attempted murder charges against him were in the end, dropped.

Former Judge Elizabeth Halverson was also in court Wednesday to testify against her estranged husband. She believes he should be locked up for much longer. Testifying through tears, she said that the attack could have killed her.

Ed Halverson spoke briefly in court, saying he was not at fault.

"If she hadn't pulled a knife on me, I wouldn't have clocked her."

Elizabeth Halverson told KVBC: "No justice for victims, especially for those who live with their abusers," says Elizabeth Halverson. "If a stranger came in, would they be giving him domestic violence? I don't think so."

"With everything that happened, what I had left was my brain and my ability to go back and work as an attorney and produce stuff. And with this brain injury, I can't go back and do that right now."

Ed Halverson pleaded guilty in court this morning to beating her.

Halverson entered an Alford plea that means he does not admit guilt, but understands there is sufficient evidence to convict him.

The plea is to one count of battery with a deadly weapon with substantial bodily harm.

Prosecutors agreed to drop the charge of attempted muder.

Halverson told the judge, David Barker, he has no recollection of the incident.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 12 and Halverson will likely be sentenced from three to ten years in prison.

Well, as expected, Galanter and Grasso have submitted a motion that OJ be granted a new trial.

Grasso’s motion faults Judge Jackie Glass for her decisions during jury selection, that she limited cross-examination of witnesses during trial and the instructions she gave to jurors before deliberations.

Grasso and Galanter also complained that Judge Glass didn’t give them enough time to fully review transcripts and video of the trial.

"She didn't give us the time we need to do a full-fledged motion," said Galanter, who lost a bid to extend the seven-day deadline.

Ok, I recall Jackie denying the extension of the seven-day deadline. She said something to the effect that she sat through the entire trial. So, did Galanter and Grasso not pay attention during the trial? And, what don’t Galanter and Grasso get about the state deadline of seven-days?

Simpson and Stewart are to be sentenced on December 5.

Cesar Laurean
According to his court-appointed attorney, Dick McNeil, Cesar Laurean has filed an extradition appeal in Mexico.

Laurean is accused of murdering Marine Maria Lauterbach and her unborn child. Their bodies were found in a fire pit in Laurean’s backyard.

Laurean’s return to Onslow County to face charges, may now take years.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather be sitting in a US jail than in a Mexican jail!

No surprise here - Ed Halverson entered a plea of not guilty to attempted murder charges.

Ed is charged with trying to kill his wife, Elizabeth Halverson, by striking her with a skillet.

Elizabeth Halverson is the embattled judge facing a Judicial Discipline Commission complaint that she mistreated staff and couldn't adequately conduct trials.

Ed Halverson told Judge David Barker that he understood the charges against him.

His trial is to begin on December 1.

Betcha Elizabeth can’t wait to take the stand – after seeing her performance at the discipline hearing, you just know this will be a circus!

Halverson says the couple had been talking about dinner when her husband came into the room with "a large frying pan." The judge says Ed gave her a "very wicked, very nasty" smile, seemed to be "gleeful," and then, "he takes the frying pan and he bashes me in the head."

Halverson says she was "soaking in blood" when her husband came back into the room and hit her "three" more times. Halverson claims she managed to secretly call 911, but tried to keep her husband calm by talking about other things.

Ed Halverson is accused of attacking his wife with a cast iron skillet earlier this month. He has been charged with battery and attempted murder

Elizabeth Halverson testified for two hours before a grand jury, Tuesday.

Elizabeth Halverson spent more than two weeks at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Surgeons used more than 100 staples to repair the lacerations to her head.

She also underwent additional tests after doctors thought she was suffering from internal bleeding.

"I have headaches all the time," said Halverson.

Ironically, Halverson appeared in the same courthouse she left in July 2007 after she was suspended from the bench.

Halverson is awaiting a decision from the discipline commission, which heard allegations of mistreating her staff, falling asleep on the bench and improperly communicating with jurors.

The judge placed a bizarre call to 911 after the alleged attacked.

"Please, help. Please, help me now," she whispered in a panic. "He's beating me with a frying pan."

Rumors have been swirling since the incident that Elizabeth herself, inflicted the damage.

While asking 911 for help, she quite calmly talks to her husband. She tells him to clean up the blood on the floor and asks him to get ice for her battered, bloodied eye.

Ed Halverson sounds pretty solicitous of his wife on the 911 recording.

I don’t know what went on in that house – Ed may be dumb as dirt, but in the call, he seems confused and concerned - not on a murdering rampage. Sounds scripted to me!

kathlb says: At first I thought it sounded like she was on a cell phone for help and didn't want him to know hence the whispering when he left the area each time. But then when I heard him sounding surprised at her injuries and seeming to say "Who did this to you?" I was flabbergasted. It's a puzzle for sure. It'll be interesting to watch and see where this goes.

Judge Halverson Undergoes Surgery for Beating Injuries

Thursday night, Edward Halverson, was arrested and accused of beating the judge with a frying pan.

Halverson had suffered severe injuries to her face, chest and upper arms. "It looks like she had been beat pretty bad," one police officer said. Police also say the injuries are not life threatening.

"Evil Ed", as nicknamed by his wife, was booked on charges of attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon and battery with substantial bodily harm.

The motorized scooter Elizabeth Halverson uses sat in the driveway at the house early Friday morning. A bloody towel was left on the scooter's seat.

Michael Schwartz, Halverson's attorney in the disciplinary complaint hearings, said he was stunned to hear that Edward Halverson was being charged with attempted murder.

"I am absolutely bewildered," he said. "I have no reason to believe anything like this would occur."

Meanwhile, In Session’s, Beth Karas reports: Yesterday, attorneys on both sides received a 1,900-page transcript of the two-week hearing. They have until September 18 to submit written closing arguments. The Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline is expected to decide the matter sometime after receiving the closing arguments.
