I just read an amazingly detailed report that both angered and sickened me.
“Within these walls: the Jersey childcare scandal
As police continue to search for bodies at Haut de la Garenne — the centre of the Jersey childcare scandal — Britain’s foremost crime writer, David James Smith, asks: how many victims, abusers and government officials kept quiet?”
The article provides an interview with one of the victims as well as some interesting history on just what Senator Stuart Syvret has been doing to correct the systematic failures of the childcare in Jersey.
You will see many familiar names in the article and get a good idea of the incestuous relationships that is the States of Jersey.
The article can be found at TIMESONLINE. It’s a brilliant read.
Senator Syvret alerted folks to the article on his blog. He also promises to explain the relevance of the 1999 Committee minutes that we told readers about, yesterday.
From Senator Stuart Syvret Blog: You know, being an uppity scum-bag prole with no education has always had a curious advantage for me in my battles in Jersey. These people always underestimate me, just like they would any working-class person.
Now, that made me really laugh!

This is one of the most amazing stories of governmental and press complicity in abuse and cover-up I have ever seen. It is a story of unchecked power and corruption unlike any other.
Let's hope Stuart Syvret and Simon Bellwood find all the help they need from writers of Smith's caliber. A long term commitment to covering the Jersey scandal is going to be necessary for justice to be served.
Anyone interested in the relationship between a free press and governmental transparency need only read the inexcusably corrupt Jersey Evening Press. The editors serve the current administration as slavishly as their Nazi masters before them.
